Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography: Themes Depicted in Works of Art by Helene E. Roberts,
The Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography is a handsomely illustrated, two-volume reference work that compares the uses of iconographic themes from mythology, the Bible and other sacred texts, literature, and popular culture in works of art through various periods, cultures, and genres. Art historians now tend to study narrative themes depicted in works of art in relation to such subjects as gender and sexuality, politics and power, ownership and possession, ceremony and ritual, and legitimacy and authority. The Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography reflects this approach by ordering the themes of various iconographic source according to these new emphases. For example, under the letter "A", instead of merely relating the stories of Aaron, Achilles, and Ariadne, as many iconographic dictionaries do, the Encyclopedia treats these figures as within the context of the themes of Abandonment, Abduction, and Abundance. Art historians from around the world have contributed to this project, and each illustrated entry discusses a major iconographic narrative theme and the historical background of that theme. The authors have paid particular attention to differences in visual presentation as well as to the ways in which a theme has evolved over time. Each essay is accompanied by a list of other works of art that depict the theme under discussion, and each entry concludes with cross-references and with a list of suggested Further Reading. Seven indexes provide the reader with additional means of access to the essays: Mythology; Judeo-Christian Tradition; Non-Western Religions; Sacred Texts; Literary Authors; Artists. A General Index concentrates on names, terms and concepts. TheEncyclopedia of Comparative Iconography is an important reference work for art historians and researchers, librarians, artists, students of art history, and the general reader.
